Revolution Studios

Two days live performance recording, mixing and mastering at the prestigious Revolution recording studio made famous by bands such as The Who, Eric Clapton, The Eurythmics, and many other famous bands and artists.

Information on Revolution Studios can be found by clicking here.

Two days in January—the traditional ‘dead zone’ for performing bands as everyone recovers from the festive season — were set aside in the busy Connection diary to place a fixed record of the performance standard regular watchers had grown to expect. Some time (at least half an hour) was spent carefully selecting four songs from our current play list to burn onto disk, and a weekend was booked at the famous Revolution Studio.

Although all experienced live musicians, only three of the band, Ian, Gary and Martyn, had recording studio experience, and most of that in smaller studios than Revolution in the past. How things had changed, with a full suite of electronic and digital wizardry available and a fully professional engineer on call, the band quickly realized that we could do more than the four songs we intended. After some debate, and the input of the engineer (“I like that Dire Straits song you did”), we quickly agreed to fit what the time would allow.

This resulted in the first day spent recording instrumentation tracks, with the band playing live in an open studio.  Sunday was set aside to spend some time working on the lead and backing vocals—impractical to record in an open studio along with the instrumentation — followed by the mixing and mastering. Keeping the mix simple, and being faithful to what we can and do perform live, allowed us to increase the content beyond our wildest expectations. In total eight songs were recorded, mixed and mastered in about 16 hours over the weekend.

The result is essentially a live rendition of some of our most popular songs from the set, demonstrating the range of music styles performed by Connection.
